Documenting Every Day In Concise Syllables

Twitter limits you to 140 characters; Facebook limits you to a little more. Haikus limit you to 5-7-5 syllables; but in the end, all that limits you is your mind. Be unlimited. Be creative. Be to the point.

Silly Day in the Nursery

We had only one kid in the nursery today, and that was miss Julia, who evidently (according to her mother) associates church time as play time with Sarah and Andrew.

Well, we certainly had a fun day with her today, inspiring this haiku:
Dino sacrifice
Everyone gathers to watch
creepy ritual.

Admittedly, maybe I was the one have the most fun playing with the plastic dinosaurs...but Julia has a blast anyway. She was giggling and smacking Andrew and then giggling more when I would laugh hysterically. I love that kid. :)

This second haiku was prompted by the kitties, who like to be a tad creepy themselves at times.

Intently staring
as she smooths down orange fur
time for Oscar's bath.

I Really Have to Pee....

I wrote an awesome haiku in class today as we were talking about Orson Welle's radio play of H.G. Well's War of the Worlds and the ensuing mass hysteria which followed.

But before I post that, I must bring to you...Haikus of the Cthulu War.

Jesse wrote this haiku for me:
For you dear, a gift:
A pulpy, tentacled death;
Cthulhu Army.
>:€ >:€ >:€ >:€ >:€
>:€ >:€ >:€ >:€ >:€ >:€ >:€
>:€ >:€ >:€ >:€ >:€

To which I responded with:
Cthulu thief lurks
waiting for attack moment...
stealthy victory.

And here is where we are now.

At any rate, here is my sci-fi inspired haiku from class today:
Ah, hysteria
widespread panic of those who
believe all they hear.

Busy Day; I Almost Forgot The Haiklog!

Sleeping kitty cats
constantly surrounding her
...become cat lady.

Magic land of glass
something enchanting inside
dangerous beauty.

I can't tell a lie
I forgot to write haikus
for Tuesday...my bad.

Yes...it's true. I forgot the haiku challenge yesterday. I am so disappointed in myself! I will not fail this early on my haiklog!

More Comic Haikus

Why's it always so
that the US and Russia
constantly compete?

The Earth's inner core
lubricated planet spins;
Sounds kind of dirty.

For Your Entertainment...

Yesterday in the comics, Get Fuzzy ran a haiku. I feel the need to share it here, as it was absolute brilliant.

Source: Comics.com

Now that that brilliant gem has been written, I unfortunately cannot write it. Oh well. I did write this little piece today though...once more inspired by astronomy class.

Humans must be dumb:
"hey, potential enemies,
come find our planet!"

Finally, in closing, I would like to share this awesome Black Keys song. It made for a good soundtrack to my unexciting three hours spent at work today. Enjoy!

Astronomy Was Normal Enough Today...

Pink clouds streak across
A royal midnight blue sky
Like cotton candy.

Giant space giraffe
Lives on an earth-like planet
In this universe.

An Uneventful Yet Satisfying Day

Repetitive tasks
This is what madness feels like
Day in and day out.

Finding internships
Selecting writing samples
And references.

Dear Campus Safety
The amount of time I waste
You owe me money.

Down By The Sea Or Under The Boardwalk

Yankee Clipper sat
At a dock in Puget Sound
Rocking in the wind.

As the sun shines down
Upon the water, is it
God or something else?

Up and down the streets
From Ballard to the UW
Now my poor feet ache.

Toddlers Are Entertaining And Inspiring

Today, as all Sundays, I worked in the nursery during church and had our two regulars: Christopher and Johnathan. Johnathan, the adorable little devil, found a Skittle somewhere in the nursery. He grinned the cutest little smile at me and pointed at his mouth. I asked what he had in his mouth and discovered a chewed up Skittle. Having no clue where said Skittle came from, I got a smidge annoyed. Fortunately, I found the Skittle source before he went in for a second forbidden treat. I can rest assured saying he didn't find it in a dusty corner of the floor or anything ickie like that. Also fortunately, he didn't mind when I took the Skittles away -- he just turned in to Godzilla and attacked the train tracks his brother had been setting up, and good times were had by all.

Aggravating pain
regardless of how I sit
coursing through my back.

Little impish smile
he found a hidden Skittle.
Naughty two-year-old!

Keep your eyes peeled; I may go out for ice cream later, and more haikus may or may not come.

Another Busy Day

Rain rhythm, rain beat
just as the radio plays
a forgotten song.

Outside it's stormy
and inside I feel lonely.
Where is my savior?

Friday, January 14, 2011

Wait, Wait! It's Still Friday!

Gack! I've been busy today, with lots of ups and downs. I nearly forgot the day's haiku! But, I will not fail this early on. :) So, here we go!

Dancing in my seat
Trying hard to think dry thoughts
Where's the bathroom, please?

Posting From My iphone

Don't need every day
The reassurance you're there
But it's nice to know.

I should be sleeping
Haikus are more important
So I stay awake.

Late Night Haikus

I went to bad far too late last night (I do that sometimes), and these came to me around 1:00 AM. More haikus may come later this evening, as the day is only half over.

Some songs make me cry
beautiful tunes, haunting words
ghosts of long ago lives.

Wants to see a smile
intended only for her
making stars sparkle.

Steady drone outside
pitter-pattering of rain
brings insanity.

The hardest of falls
cannot stop dreams coming true.
There's magic in dreams.

Cookie-cutter mold
your life is dictated.
Stereotype fail.

Short and Sweet

Dear unknown future,
don't know how I feel 'bout you.
Guess we'll wait and see.

Scrapbook pages
memories last forever.
Nostalgia is sweet.

It's An Exciting Life I Lead

Today has been an interesting day. There's been plenty to do and plenty of time for thinking. And plenty of music-listening for inspiring haikus.

iSheep, they follow
the blind following the blind
for reasons unknown.

First snow fall of year
always feels magical, like
sweet serenity.

Smells like teen spirit
vampires in Wuthering Bites?
Trash literature.

Embarrassing, sure
but there's something so pleasing
in reading bad books.

Idiotic cat
jumps but misses (so graceful).
Tiny pricks of blood.

Sentimental heart
keeps beating, keeps beating on.
Everyone's at it.

Inspiration Strikes Any Time (Not Surprisingly Through Jesse)

I have two more haikus for Monday at the last minute. Jesse was the inspiration for both of these...which really shouldn't surprise anyone who knows him. Or me.

Though you aren't really
a celestial being
you light up my life.

Haiklog, not hike log
collecting pertinent thoughts
among the silly.

Haiklog. What a beautiful, awkward, clunky, perfect name for a daily blog kept by me! I love it. It was truly love at first sight - I never even thought such a thing existed until there was you.

Goodnight all; more haiku awaits come morning.

The Dark Side of the Moon and Solar Eclipses

These two haikus were inspired during astronomy class this morning. It should not be hard to determine what topic we were discussing today.

Dark side of the moon
not just a Pink Floyd album
celestial too.

Li'l Shop of Horrors
total eclipse of the sun
bing! Astronomy

Both of these are related to pop culture. If you aren't familiar with Pink Floyd or Little Shop of Horrors, I highly suggest you go Google them right now. Listen to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album, and rent either version of Little Shop of Horrors; whether it's the original hoaky Jack Nicholson version or the musical 80s remake. Both are really quite enjoyable.

A Very Abnormal Sunday

Most Sundays, my family goes to church, and then we go to my grandparents' house in Auburn for dinner. Today, however, is my (other) grandma's 70th birthday party. So today, we went to her party between church and dinner. It made for a busy but interesting day.

Gray clouds, calm gray sky
creek drifts slowly by my feet
as I contemplate.

Two times eleven
never would have been without
seven perfect tens.

Jupiter in sight
befriending our well-known moon
hanging out tonight.

Happiness, it is...
the creation of new goals
to improve the self.

The Haiku Resolution (Some Days Are More Exciting Than Others)

A haiku a day
Three-sixty-five days a year
Twenty-eleven.

Salad and pizza
and then delicious cupcakes
nice day with Jesse.

Kittie purrs loudly
as radio plays softly
and I drift to sleep.

Office Haikus

These haikus were written while at work (on a break, I assure you), and they were the inspiration for the haiku-a-day project.

Sounds of the office
ringing phones, typing fingers
will drive one crazy

Oh, data entry
such a repetitive task
til eyes glaze over

Distant chatter is
heard from other cubicles
/headdesk ...and repeat.

Oh, monotony!
A printer buzzing elsewhere
joins the office sounds.

A Haiku A Day, Every Day, For 2011

I don't normally bother with New Year's Revolutions. For one thing, the change of the calendar does not mean very much in the grand scheme of things. It simply means that the Earth has completed a full revolution around the sun (forgive me; I am studying astronomy for the month of January).

The point of this blog and this project isn't really a New Year's Revolution. It is a fun little time waster. It is something to carry me through a year of transitions and change, as I graduate from college in May and begin life in "the new world" (whatever that means, anyway).

Some days I may elaborate on posts with more than just haikus, and other days I may simply post the days haiku (or plural, depending on the day). In the end, though, there will be a haiku for every day of 2011 (minus week one).
